••• Ciro & Sal's Ultimate Employee Reunion •••
May 16-18, 2008

WHAT A FANTASTIC TIME!!!!!

I think everyone will agree that the reunion weekend was an OUTSTANDING SUCCESS, far exceeding anyone's reasonable expectations!! What an amazing and fortunate group of people we are to have one another for friends! Enormous thanks to those who came from especially long distances........Braid Cochran gets the prize for coming from ENGLAND but close behind him were attendees from California, New Mexico, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Vermont, New York and New Jersey not to mention many others closer by in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts! Seeing so many familiar faces together brought smiles, tears and joy to all who attended. Thanks to Larry and the kitchen crew at Ciro's for masterfully satisfying everyone's craving for their 'favorites', to the staff at Bubala's for welcoming us on Friday and the biggest thanks of all to CIRO, PATTI, SAL and JOSEPHINE without whom none of these last 58 (or so) years would have been the same. The old addage 'a picture is worth a thousand words' still holds true, so here are some links to slideshows of photos......

If anyone has more photos, comments, recollections, etc. that you would like to send along please email them to lauren@ciroandsals.com and I'll try to post them.

For anyone who missed the reading of Don Risho's poem, specially written for the occasion, here it is:

To Ciro & Sal's and the gallant crew that always held it together.
All through the summer heat far into the brisk fall weather.
The years have treated us kindly, with heartfelt thanks to heaven.
Especially for Ciro Cozzi, who just turned eighty seven.
We will share a bit of laughter, endless talk throughout the day.
Reminisce about the old times, before we go our separate way.
To both Rays, Paul, and Alex, to all the Mike's, Wayne and Lou.
And to a host of many others.........."Here's looking at you".
A rousing cheer for the waiters, obliging hungry patrons to feel at home.
To Lauren, Carol, Dennis and Brizzi, and to the ever pleasant Carbone.
To recall again those frantic nights, as waiters glide over a slippery floor.
And watch them carry heavy trays then vanish swiftly, past the swinging door.
They hustle all night for a bountiful tip, to be given with any luck.
While the cooks in the kitchen yell fiercely, for a waiter to pick up.
Forever to be remembered are the friends no longer here.
And a chain of lasting memories we shall always hold dear.
To Al D., Barbara, Sunny and to those notable friends at rest.
Each one has touched us deeply, now their souls are eternally blessed.
I regret not being with you at this momentous time.
But you will always be with me, within the heart and mind.
God be with you in whatever you aim to do
And wherever you go, may the sauce be with you!

Don sent a second poem that won second place in a national poetry contest.........surely he was thinking of all of us when he wrote:

Old coins are becoming hard to find, their presence is nearing an end.

They may be of value, and very rare, but rarer still is a friend

Diogenes walked the streets at night with a lantern in his hand.

He searched for that which many men seek to find an honest man.

I have no place to call my own, no wealth or claim to fame.

No medals to wear, no mountains to scale, and applause was never my aim.

I count my blessings, not my coins, for money never rings true.

The rarest gift of all is a faithful friend like you.

An email from Marty Hykin prior to the reunion:

Hello Lauren,
......... I did leave out one interesting detail in my first reply. It so happens that I awoke this AM from a long and complicated dream about being back in Ciro's kitchen, trying to put together a fine meal for some young couple - the details not important - but how "Twilight Zone" to find your invitation to the reunion waiting for me when I checked my email this AM! I do have these Ciro & Sal's dreams once in a very long while. They usually involve the complete preparation of some huge meal, with all the minute details lived through; slicing and dicing, cooking and seasoning, even hollering for the waiters to pick up. There is the normal amount of stress and pressure recalled as well, it is hard work even in a dream, but these are not nightmares, just a reminder that I can still do this stuff in my sleep.
Yes, there are some names missing from the list, some of whom I know are sadly missing from this world by now, but others I'm not sure about. Fred Tasch? Jonathan Swetzoff?
Enjoy the party. Sounds like a great idea. Ciro is a good man to work for and to work with, likewise the rest of the crew in the golden age, although there were times when we all drove each other a bit crazy. Ever since my time there I 've always been a bit surprised when other workplaces did not achieve that same wonderful togetherness and joy we maintained at Ciro's. We thought it was normal. A rare place and rare people.
Marty

PICK UP!!!!
ANNOUNCING THE CIRO & SAL’S ULTIMATE EMPLOYEE REUNION

Whoever you are, wherever you are, if your are receiving this message, you once trudged down the clam shell alley way of Kiley Court and entered the world of Ciro & Sal’s. You left your other life behind--suspended--and joined the rest of us in that dim, dark, magical space. It may have been in the 50s, the 60s, the 70s, the 80s, the 90s, or the 00s; it may have been one season or decades. You may have been in the kitchen or on the floor; line cook, middleman, sauté, pasta, salad or dessert person, dish or pot washer, bartender or service bar, hostess, busboy (busperson), waiter (waitron), cashier, or cleanup, or manager……..but you were there. You remember the smells- garlic, espresso, red sauce, wine, and perhaps wood smoke in the offseason…..the tastes- Al Burro, Nocce di Vitello Bolognese, Pesce ala Giousue, Umido, Zuccini Misto, Romanelli, Foriana, Cozze alla Cozzi…..the sounds- on the floor, Verdi, Puccini, Vivaldi (maybe a bit warped from thousands of playings), along with the crashing of dishes in the bus buckets, and “Behind You!” and “Comin’ through!”; in the kitchen, the clatter of pots and pans, and plenty of screaming; the steaming of the espresso machine, the banging of the swinging doors….the sights- the straw Chianti bottles overhead, the candlelight, the polished wooden tables, the slate floor. You remember the stations: Siberia, Home, Corner, Triangle, the Cage, and the Third World; the individual tables: Corner Round, Mirror, Suicide, Table 10 and Family Table…..
Yes, you remember, because you were there. Being part of the ‘Ciro’s family’ puts you in a select group of people, a community of souls on this earth. And here is your opportunity to reunite with that unique group.
This year, 2008, in the month of May, on the weekend beginning Friday the 16th, you are invited to participate in an ultimate reunion of people, food, drink, fun, laughter, memories and happenings to celebrate the experience we had together, to remember many who are no longer with us, and, of course, to pay tribute to Ciro (who, coincidentally will turn a young 87 years old on May 21) and Patti. Whatever else you do in this life of yours, CELEBRATE WITH US NOW!

OK Folks,
If you received this announcement, we obviously have your mailing address. But how about all the mailing addresses that we don’t have? Please help us out with this. If you have any contact information that would be helpful, or have names that have been missed, please email us at info@ciroandsals.com.
We are hoping to see as many of you as possible. This is a celebration of friends, and weren’t we all friends at one time? Your RSVP is important to us. In addition to the restaurant’s need to plan for this event, it would also be helpful to the Planning Committee to have an idea of how many folks might attend. We’re trying to think up some activities for Saturday afternoon……..maybe sailing, a dune tour, a picnic? And please let us know if you will be at Bubala’s for cocktails on Friday the 16th.
It’s going to be a big party! And we hope that you will be part of it. Send in that RSVP, and MAKE YOUR RESERVATION as soon as you can. If you are coming singly, make a reservation and let us know what year you worked with us. We will group contemporaries together to fill the tables and get everyone in. You can also reach the Planning Committee through info@ciroandsals.com.
Maybe you even have our phone numbers in some old address book.

We will be happy to hear from you!
Fondly,
The Ciro & Sal’s 58th Reunion Planning Committee,
James Brizzi • Marie Pace
Dennis Minsky • Lauren Richmond

P.S. If you have any old photos, memories, or mementos, please bring them along. We’re going to try to build a scrapbook commemorating all of the great years we shared and the friendships that began at Ciro & Sal’s.
